Competitive Level

Explanation of Questions Most People Ask About Being a Part of Our Competitive Team

When classes are entered in a competition they are divided between ages and levels.
Ages: our ages are described as bitty, mini, junior, intermediate and senior. – it really doesn’t matter your exact age as a dancer, it is the class average age which classifies you into this category. We have multiple classes in some of these ages so we number them as 1, 2 ,3. These are separated by both the number of classes a student takes and the ability of the class.

There are three levels. Novice means it is your first year in competition and pre-competitive means that you take less classes than you do if you are called competitive. This helps the competitions separate and create fairness to the students. If you choose to be on our team, but take less classes, you will not be against the students who take more classes per week. It is simply just two different levels of hourly commitment per week.

Extra cost: we attend 4 competitions a year. They are all in the city so we do not have to travel! It is an average of $35-$40 per dance to enter each competition. You will be told the time of your dance and are expected to be there one hour before and stay until the awards ceremony. Our LED parent committee holds many fundraisers to help keep the cost down. If you participate it really helps!

Why do it? I feel it is good experience to dance on a stage in front of three judges and have them critique how the students are doing. It is a learning experience to hear what can be improved on and also hear praise for what students are doing well. Positivity and good sportsmanship are always enforced. It is very fun, friendships are often made between studios and it is an overall studio spirit lifting and bonding experience for everyone.
(ps: it is not at all like what you see on tv) lol

Competitive Team Expectations

There is a higher level of expectation in dance competitions today. We are involved in franchised, national, four day, large competitions that have us competing against Toronto and other out of town studios that travel to attend these events. The studios we see have incredible talent, are committed and inspire us!
If a student would like to be a part of the Danceworks competitive team, they must be in a “package”.
* INDIVIDUAL STUDENT PLACEMENT FOR EACH CLASS, WILL BE AT THE DISCRETION OF MISS LAURIE AND THE CLASS TEACHER.
** To INSPIRE you to have your competition and costume fees in ON TIME, 13% (hst) will be taken off of your monthly bill if you have all of your competition fees and costume fees in by the end of September. (You may use/split these fees with post-dated cheques or on a credit card from September to December.)
Our Parent committee is trying hard to help find ways to cover these fees. Any money raised from participating in fundraisers will be credited to your account.

IF A STUDENT IS ENROLLED IN A PACKAGE, THEIR FIRST SIBLING IS HALF PRICE AND THEIR THIRD SIBLING IS FREE.

Everyone will be on a mandatory probationary period and may be moved to a different class or put back to recreational level based on performance and commitment.

* New “NOVICE” first –time competitive kinder-classes who are asked by Miss Laurie to become competitive are the only exception to this rule. They would only compete in novice tap for the first year.
